Book review

Wings of Gauze is an exploration of love and commitment. Johnnie Bonson meets Nate Newman on a California beach. Nate is discouraged and headed back home to Canada. He is giving up on trying to make it as an actor in the US. Johnnie has taken an early retirement to cope with fibromyalgia. She is a fledgling author. Throughout the thirty short stories composing the novel, there are struggles, disappointments, losses and celebrations. Entwined within this love story is a murder mystery, the unfolding of friendship, separation and reunion, coping with a “hidden” disability, and the continuing responsibilities of parenting and grandparenting. From the thrill of a family Christmas celebration to the murder of Nate’s ex-wife, the Newman family survives by leaning on each other, laughter, faith and communication. When you reach the end, you will wish you hadn’t.
